kuih Jepun & Apam Balik

We all know that doraemon's favourite snack is dorayaki and we can actually find it at Muar's alley.

But this is called differently, the Malay called them Kuih Jepun, which means Japanese cake, and the Chinese called it the red bean cake. It is located near Jalan Abdullah bus stop, and turn right after you see HSBC, and it will be on ur left, a shop that is half occupied. It is started by two Malay elder and is has operated for 40 years, and the shop is not really outstanding but during afternoon, you can see a lot of people lining up.

You can see that the cakes are freshly baked, instant baked. They specially make flour paste as a base, then use a small heat to slowly grill, then add one cooked red bean, then cover them up with the paste, is a very bouncy texture cake. Filled with red beans, filling and yet not too sweet, is definitely a best choice for tea snack. I bet you dont know that they are are ovened by charcoaled, is rare to see people use this method. That's why you can feel the taste of a little char-grilled. Is just RM2 for 7 pieces, and is really addictive for each bite you take them.

The stall outside of it is actually a stall that been for 3 generation Pakcik Yusuf Daud, specially on making red bean cake and apam balik, the apam balik here is different from what we have eaten normally, the same flour paste, when they are baked, the outer layer are yellow-ish. Crispy and not too sweet, unlike others that spread butter on the pan, rather they use butter strips, and by this it can bring out a rather strong taste of butter yet is not too oily. a great recommendation.

There are a lot of regulars here that have eaten here for many years, a lot of people will recommned to come to this place too.
