Mee Siput



Muar is basically a food haven in Johor, famous for their otak-otak and asam fish, but recently, there is a snack called the Mee Siput that been receiving everyone’s love, there is some tourist would buy them as souvenir too. Most Chinese will call it “Mee Cracker”. It’s actually the past memories for Muar, is yellowish around noodle but fried, not much taste but dip in curry sauce, is a perfect taste combination. Basically every pack of the Mee Siput will give a long a small pack of chili sauce, it’s how the locals it. Firstly you crunch them into pieces then pour the sauce, is like eating the snack “MAMEE”.

If you directly translate from Malay is actually called the snail noodle, because the texture is like the snail shell, but the locals call them mee cracker because you eat them like cracker which has the crispy sound.

Look back at history, this Mee Siput is from 1950s when it was a trending snack around Muar’s school, , and then spread throughout the South Malaysia , but with the loss of time , more and more snack choices, people gradually forgotten, or even not heard Muar there is such a snack . Production was mostly from small business or home based business, so each household has a different sauce recipe, then it became a secret weapon for each of them, some used sambal sauce, some usedpure chili sauce, and also sweet chili sauce.

Until recent years, it is said that the number of tourists visiting Muar has increased.  When they tasted such a delicious snack, these visitors fell in love with this unique spicy and crispy snack, and they recommended it to their friends and relatives, news spread quickly from mouth to mouth.  This traditional childhood snack is much noted again, and has become popular souvenirs ever since.
